A warning has been issued to members of the public after marmoset monkeys have escaped from a home.

The monkeys escaped from a property on Tuesday afternoon (May 2) from a property in Carnforth.

Residents are being told to check bird boxes, garages and sheds as Lancaster City Council believe the monkeys may try to find somewhere warm to sleep but people should not try to feed or catch the monkeys themselves to avoid injury.

Marmosets have specific welfare needs specifically relating to their environment and climate.

As they aren’t native to the UK and originate from tropical locations such as Central and South America they need somewhere warm.

A spokesperson for Lancaster City Council said: “Lancaster City Council has been notified that some marmoset monkeys have escaped from a property in the Carnforth area.”

“If anyone has any sightings of the monkeys please call and report the location and time of sightings to one of the following agencies.”
