A woman who fatally stabbed a young girl in a park on Mother's Day had previously attacked people, and on one occasion armed herself with a knife and went out in the middle of the night, an inquest heard.

Eltiona Skana killed seven-year-old Emily Jones in Queens Park  in March 2020.

Skana, who was 30 at the time, was later convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to her paranoid schitzophrenia and given a life sentence with a minimum of ten years and eight months.

An inquest into the death of Emily is taking place at Bolton Coroners Court.

On day three of the hearing, the inquest heard from her sister Klestora Skana who told the court about Skana's troubled background.

She said that when they lived in Albania her father got into debt to another man and the situation forced Skana to marry him and they later moved to Kuwait.

She said before this her sister never had mental health difficulties but was troubled afterwards.

Klestora and her sister came to England in 2014 and later moved to Bolton after staying in London and Liverpool.

Klestora told the inquest about  disturbing incidents her sister had been involved in.

She said there had been an attack on a woman they were staying with, attacks on her and an attack on her mother who later moved over to live with them.

It was put to her that while they were living on Ernest Street in the town her sister “on one occasion went out in the middle of the night armed with a knife.”

She said: “That is right.”

Klestora also said she had tried to take her sister to Bentley House, a mental health service in Bolton, two days before the killing, but had not been able to see a doctor.

She said: “My plan was to get her to see the doctor and to ask him if he could get my sister back on the depot and not on medication.”

“We went inside.

“My sister had to write down her name and we just waited in the room, we had waited for 20 to 25 minutes, then I went the reception and asked if the doctor would come, they said he would come down now.”

But she said her sister got tired of waiting and they left.

It was put to Klestora that they did not attend on March 20 and she was confusing this with a visit on March 3, but she said it did go ahead on March 20 and it was her mother who took Eltiona there on the earlier date not her.

The court heard previously that Skana’s medication was swapped from depot injections to oral medication in August 2019.

Klestora was asked whether she had spoken to her sister since the killing.

She said: "Yes of course."

She was then asked whether any explanation was given as to why she did what she did.

Klestora said: "She never explained."

The inquest, before Coroner Timothy Brennand, continues.
