TODAY: WHAT YOU SET IS WHAT YOU GET

1. How you set up, stand to the ball and subsequently align your body will influence your swing more than anything else. With the clubface aiming directly at the target, feel as though you have simply bent forward from the hips and slightly flexed the knees until you can see only half of the laces on your shoes. Try to sense that you could push your feet into the ground as though you were trying to leave your footprints in the turf! Your back will be comfortably straight and the hands and arms will automatically "dangle" just under your nose.

2. With the feet just a fraction wider than the shoulders and the weight even across both feet, sense that you are hitting the ball from an up hill slope. The left arm should be comfortable, straight with the right just angled slightly in towards your right hip. This will encourage the right side of your body to "sit" a little lower than the left. You should sense that your left ear is level or a fraction behind the ball. With every club in the bag, imagine that your hands sit directly opposite the inside of your left leg which creates a feel of the clubshaft being an extension of the left arm.

3. The only real variable in your set up will be the position of the ball for different clubs. Maintain a simple system when making a full swing by playing all your pitching clubs through to nine iron from the middle of the stance, eight iron through to five from midway between the centre and your left heel and the very longest clubs through to driver directly opposite the left heel. Use this system as a guide. Never make a full swing with the ball beyond the centre of your stance. With great set up fundamentals, you have set up perfect foundations to make a good swing.
