A driver has been arrested in Bolton after a police chase which ended in a crash.

The chase took place in Westhoughton on Saturday and the officers say that the motorist fled the scene of the crash and was arrested a short time later.

Staff from a nearby shop came running out after they heard the noise.

Photos from the time show the aftermath of the crash as police and fire crews blocked off part of Manchester Road in Over Hulton to deal with the incident.

The partner of a driving instructor, whose car was hit in the crash, said that at the time the instructor was with a student on a lesson.

They said: “After the incident my partner walked in covered in blood and I was so shocked to see him like that.

“He was teaching at the time so had a pupil with him in the car.

“After the crash, with the help of another man, they apprehended the person who tried to run away until the police caught up and made the arrest.”

The driver, who was being pursued by police, was arrested after fleeing on foot and has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving documentation offences.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3.15pm on Saturday 20 May 2023, a car being briefly pursued by police was involved in a collision after the car failed to stop in Westhoughton.

“During the pursuit, the car collided with a member of the public's vehicle which caused minor damage.

“The driver of the car being pursued by police fled the scene on foot, and was arrested shortly after by officers.

“A man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving documentation offences.”
