Officers searching for a missing woman have found a body.

Shannon Canning went missing from her home in Keswick Court, Lancaster, in the early hours of Friday morning (May 19).

The 24-year-old did not arrive for work at Tipple bar where she was due to open up on the afternoon of May 19.

She had not been in contact with any of her family or friends since leaving home.

Following reports of her disappearance, police launched a missing persons investigation and specialist dive teams were sent to Lancaster to search part of the River Lune earlier this week.

On Wednesday afternoon, police issued and update and confirmed they had found a body.

A spokesperson for the police said: "You may have seen a large police presence in Lancaster this afternoon and we want to give you an update as to why.

"We can confirm that we were called today (May 24) at around 4.20pm to a report that a body had been found in the River Lune, near Halton.

"Specialist search teams have subsequently attended the area and can sadly confirm that the body of a woman has been recovered.

"Although formal identification has yet to take place, we believe the body to be that of missing Shannon Canning.

"Shannon’s family have been made aware of this sad development and our thoughts are with them at this upsetting time."
