Signs have officially been installed on two narrow residential streets where HGVs have often ended up getting stuck and causing damage to cars.
The signs have been installed at the top of Bamber Croft leading to Holden Lea, and on Wellington Street, following a number of concerns raised there too.
It comes as the former executive cabinet member for highways and transport, Cllr Stuart Haslam, approved the commissioning of a traffic survey to be carried out earlier this year.
Residents in Westhoughton have been campaigning for years to get the problem resolved.
Hazel Dawn Darlington, who lives on the small street of Bamber Croft, just off the A6, says she is “absolutely over the moon”.
She added: “So far, we have had no heavy vehicles and the signs are proving to be working.
“I want to say a massive thankyou to The Bolton News (for raising awareness), neighbours, and councillors.
“It means so much.
“We feel safer and have had no more vehicles damaged or written off.”
Neighbours raised concerns in the past that someone would be injured on the small road after a number of crashes.
Hazel says that some vehicles were written off or scratched due to the HGVs being unable to turn around, and that they were only able to get out of the street by reversing.
Residents were particularly worried for older residents and young children who live nearby.
Cllr Martin Tighe says that it has been a long time coming and is a win for residents in the area.
He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic and I am overwhelmed for the residents of Bamber Croft and Holden Lea and the surrounding areas.
“It’s been a long time coming.
“People have put so much work into, including Anna-Marie Watters and former councillor Cllr Andrea Finney.
"A huge thanks to all the residents also on Wellington Street and Anderby Walk, Sally, Sam, and Greame to name but a few who were key in highlighting the same issue on their streets."
Cllr Tighe says that he hopes that the sign will work to help deter HGV from these roads to improve things for the residents.
