A sliproad onto a major roundabout in Bolton was closed off after a van fire today.

The sliproad from the A666(M) onto Kearsley Roundabout was closed off at around 4pm today, Monday.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that a van was seen alight on the sliproad, although no one was hurt.

Sid Vallely-Smith, a firefighter at Bury Fire Station, said: "It was a van fire just off Kearsley roundabout.

"When we got there it was on fire. We opened the back doors and there were a bunch of tyres in there, we had to put them out.

"We were there for 45 minutes to an hour. Bury fire station were first on scene.

"There were no injuries. The van was a write off, it was engulfed in flames."

Mr Vallely-Smith added that they arrived at the scene at around 4pm.

At just before 5pm, traffic data website Inrix reported: "M61 Northbound exit slip road closed, queueing traffic due to vehicle fire at J3 (Kearsley Spur)."

Earlier this evening, traffic was reported to have been diverting onto the A666 St Peter's Way, but that congestion was also reported on that road due to the diversion.
