A historic town centre pub is another step away from being transformed into a trendy cocktail bar as Slug & Lettuce make plans to come to Bolton town centre.

Signage for the Grade II listed buidling currently occupied by Yates, which has been in the town centre for as a long as most can remember, has been give the green light.

The new signage will be installed over the terracotta façade on Bradshawgate.

Proposals to open a Slug & Lettuce were first put forward late last year and the trendy pub chain is owned by Stonegate Group, which also manage Yates.

A Bolton Council report into the latest plans stated: “The building has an attractive terracotta façade fronting onto Bradshawgate.

“There are two existing fascia signs and projecting signs on the frontage and the proposed replacement signs will replace these with altered lettering.

“The halo illumination is very subtle and the signs relate to an existing fascia feature on the building and would thereby be sympathetic to the special character of the listed building.”

It added: “The halo illumination on the proposed signs will illuminate only the lettering and will be very subtle and as such would not harm the visual amenity of neighbouring occupiers.”

The remodelling of the Bradshawgate pub will come alongside other similar projects by other developers around the same area which are aimed at attracting more visitors to the town centre and to revive Bolton’s nightlife.

The site, which was built in 1906, was first listed as historic in 1999, which means that any changes must be carefully monitored to ensure that its heritage is preserved and that the historic features are preserved

But having judged the application, Bolton Council’s planning department has decided to approve the changes to the signage, which will see two new illuminated signs installed along with a new internal illuminated projection sign.

As well as the new signage, the proposed changes to the pub will include new timber rafts and seating booths with changes to the inside of the building including the removal of a podium and stage, installing new timber rafts and seating booths as well as adding to new casing to the staircase.

This will be so that the new design of the pub is in keeping with branches of Slug & Lettuce all over the country.
