The family of the two boys who were seriously injured in a horror car crash on the M66 in May have announced the children can finally come home from hospital.

Frankie Hough, 38, from Chadderton, was driving on the motorway with her two sons, Tommy and Rocky, and her nephew, Tobias Welby, on May 13 when the family was involved in a crash.

The family was taken to hospital by air ambulance but the pregnant mother of two died two days later due to her injuries.

A man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in relation to the injuries sustained by Tommy, nine, and Tobias, four.

The two cousins have been in hospital ever since the incident - up until now.

In an announcement on social media, the family said all the boys are doing well and finally get to leave the ward, though they need ongoing physiotherapy.

John Welby, Tobias' grandfather, also said there is still "a lot of work" to be done to "get Tobias back to his old self".

Still, he said he is "very bright" and is "back to being Toby every day".

Speaking to The Oldham Times, Tobias' father, Aaron Welby, also said the family is delighted with the boys' progress, seeing them move from intensive care to the rehabilitation ward and finally, home.

He said: "We made it!

"We are over the moon to have our boys back.

"Our boys have defied the odds. We can all agree how lucky we are in this tragic incident to have all three boys back with us, demonstrating their strength and character."

The boys return just after Frankie and her unborn baby girl, Neeve, were laid to rest.

The family arranged a colourful funeral to celebrate Frankie's life.

John said the send-off was "beautiful" and "perfect".

Aaron added: "She would be so happy that our boys are safe and recovering.

"We take some comfort in this tragedy that their lives were spared, and so we celebrate all the goodness that Frankie was and bring colour and light and celebration of her life to a dark and tragic incident.

"Together we move forward as a family with the realisation of how precious life is and with the support of all the people from local and widespread communities.

"The incredible doctors and nurses at Manchester Royal Children's Hospital, we could never thank them enough for the care, love and support our families have received."

John added: "We as a family thank you for all your prayers and support throughout this ordeal.

"We are all lucky that no further lives were lost as doctors told us Toby was a miracle - they could not believe him coming through.

"As for all the medical staff at Manchester Royal and Ronald McDonald's Charity Trust, we salute you."
