University of Bolton to host pop-up exhibition to showcase trailblazing women in the law over past 100 years

The University of Bolton’s Law School is to next week host a free two-day pop-up banner exhibition to celebrate the centenary of the first woman at the Bar.

The Women in Law exhibition will be displayed in the main reception area of Senate House on Monday and Tuesday, 26 and 27 June from 9am-5pm.

The exhibition consists of 12 banners and is being displayed in venues around the country to help celebrate Dr Ivy Williams, who was called to the Bar in 1922. Although she never practised as a barrister, she did go on to have an academic career in the law and paved the way for many other women.

The exhibition also celebrates a group of women who have been trailblazers and whose pioneering legal careers have helped women progress in the judiciary.

It will also be displayed in courts around the country, starting in Oxford where Dr Ivy Williams lived and studied.

Dr Ike Uhumuavbi, Senior Lecturer in the School of Law, Greater Manchester Business School, University of Bolton, said: “We greatly appreciate the Courts and Tribunal for highlighting the importance of women in the law.

“We are extremely grateful to the University for supporting and agreeing to display this exhibition, especially President and Vice Chancellor Professor George Holmes, Registrar Sue Duncan, and Executive Director in the Vice Chancellor’s Office Aris Matthaiou for their support.”
