The University of Bolton's teacher training programme has raised its standards to good after being graded inadequate last year.

The university's Teach Lead, has been reinspected with Ofsted praising the course.

It comes almost 12 months after Ofsted rated the secondary programme “inadequate”, although the further education programme was rated ‘good’.

Ofsted reported leaders “have wasted no time in introducing rapid and sustainable improvements to the quality of the ITE (Initial Teacher Education) curriculum”.

Inspectors found that trainees are well prepared to teach their chosen subjects and "receive high levels of pastoral support during their training year".

The curriculum was described as being underpinned by a strong enrichment programme, which includes weekly masterclasses.

Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, said: “I am delighted that the significant efforts put in by the team has led to a swift return to a strong Ofsted outcome.

“Staff have used the opportunity to further develop and improve our provision and I look forward to seeing the new cohorts progress into the teaching profession.”

Ofsted found: "Most trainees were positive about their training programme and the close-knit relationships that they forge with course tutors and subject mentors. Typically, trainees achieve well. They are well sought after by employers in the local area."

The course provides, said inpectors, trainees with suitable and contrasting secondary school placements, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the needs of all pupils.

"Trainees learn about how to safeguard themselves and pupils, and how to create a positive climate for learning," reported inspectors.

Inspectors added: "Leaders are relentless in their commitment to providing trainees with highly effective ITE programmes.

"For example, since the previous inspection, leaders have wasted no time in introducing rapid and sustainable improvements to the quality of the ITE curriculum.

"In particular, they have completed a root-and-branch review into the appropriateness of school placements.

"Leaders have also ensured that the standard of mentoring is typically effective. Overall, leaders have made sure that the ITE curriculum at Teach Lead Bolton successfully prepares trainees to embark on their journey as early career teachers.

"The ITE curriculum is ambitious, well organised and it goes beyond the requirements of the DfE’s core content framework."
