Bury College has been praised after its latest inspection by the education regulator.

The Market Street college, which is attended by students in Bolton, was ranked "good" in all areas by Ofsted, apart from apprenticeships in which it "requires improvement".

The college, which has 5,362 students, was described as a "supportive and inclusive environment" and "learners and apprentices behave very well in college and at work".

The report, which was carried out from March 28 to 31, said: “Leaders recognise that many learners face significant barriers in their personal lives.

“A substantial number of young learners have a history of not attending school.

“Their attendance is steadily improving because of the support they receive from college staff and their parents or guardians.”

The safeguarding arrangements at the college were seen as "effective" and staff are "appropriately trained to carry out their roles".

The report added: “Staff work with appropriate agencies to ensure that learners and apprentices receive the full support they need.

“Staff benefit from training on the awareness of self-harm, drugs and alcohol misuse.”

The report said that senior leaders and managers have clear strategies for their curriculums and carefully consider the courses they provide for learners.

The report said: “Lecturers and learning and skills coaches are well qualified and experienced to teach their subjects.

"They routinely update their subject knowledge.”

The report said the college should improve on prioritising support for apprentices who have not completed their apprenticeships on time and to help them catch up to move onto the next stage of their careers.

It also added that college leaders should ensure that earners and apprentices attend their classes frequently so that they remain on their courses and achieve their qualifications.

College principal and chief executive, Charlie Deane, said: “This is wonderful news for Bury, Bury College and the communities we serve.

“The report reflects the hard work of our staff, students, governors, parents and partners and supports the Bury College vision of excellent outcomes and positive futures for all.”

College deputy principal – curriculum and quality, Becky Tootell, added: “I am delighted for our staff, students and governors.

“Their commitment and hard work have rightly been recognised by Ofsted as delivering high quality education and training.

“It is great to see that the behaviour of our students has been praised in the report.

“Student behaviour and mutual respect amongst students is something that we strive for every single day.”
