A trio of TV stars have been thrilled this week to receive honorary degrees from the University of Bolton.

Chef James Martin, well known in the town for his association with Bolton Food Festival, Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly and Granada Reports journalist Elaine Willcox were all amongst those honoured alongside graduating students.

The ceremonies took place at the Albert Halls.

ITV’s Elaine Willcox  said: “This is a huge honour for me, as well as to be able to celebrate with you all today.”

She added: “I’m very passionate about Bolton and over 15 years I have watched the transformation of the university.

“It is an incredible university and leads in many fields, something you should all be very proud of."

Ms Willcox, who lives in Bolton, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Science for her outstanding contribution to broadcasting and journalism having covered huge stories both at home and abroad over the course of a storied career.

Joining her later in the week was James Martin, presenter of James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen, who was awarded the degree of Doctor of Arts for his outstanding contribution to hospitality and entertainment.

He said: “Life is a journey and your journey is about to start.

“And this journey is a little bit like a horse race, you are not necessarily competing against each other, you are competing against yourself.

“In life you will face several hurdles and it is how you get round them and through them.

“I remember as a young kid facing my first hurdle when I failed cookery at school.

“A true story! I didn’t realise I was dyslexic until I was 35, but all those hurdles in life make you better.”

He added: “I wish you the very best in all that you do and I will see you outside in the real world!”

The moment was every bit as much of a proud one for Tess Daly, wife of Bolton born Radio 2 DJ Vernon Kay, who was awarded Doctor of Arts for her outstanding contribution to entertainment.

She said: “It’s overwhelming being here today.

“I wouldn’t be here without the support of my family and I am so glad that my mum could join us here today and my wonderful in-laws.”

“I would like to dedicate this award to my late dad because he would be so unbelievably proud to see me standing here today.

“Congratulations to you all, may you go far and prosper in your careers.”
