A 37-year-old man died after  vomiting caused him to be starved of oxygen while at home.

Tamas Rudolf Nemeth was at home at Blackburn Road, Astley Bridge, washing his clothes in the sink when he suddenly vomited.

He was found on January 19 on the kitchen floor with clothes in the sink and the water running, an inquest into death heard.

The running water had overflowed to outside the front door, alerting neighbours who called police.

Mr Nemeth had only been in the UK since 2019 and was a heavy drinker according to his brother, Krisztian Kocsis.

Sitting at Bolton Coroners Court, coroner John Pollard said: “A week and a half before his death, he felt sick and was vomiting a lot.

The Bolton News:

“You told him to call an ambulance and go to hospital, which he did and waited a long time to be examined and stayed there for a day.”

Mr Kocsis had revealed in his statement that his brother had attended rehab to address his alcohol problems.

The last time the brothers spoke was on January 16.

In a post-mortem, pathologist Dr Patrick Waugh at the Royal Bolton Hospital said that while Mr Nemeth had a fatty liver and swelling in the brain to indicate excess alcohol consumption, this did not cause his death at the time.

Dr Waugh explained that while Mr Nemeth may have had a gag reflex, continued vomiting could be fatal.

Dr Waugh gave the cause of death as asphyxia from aspirated gas in the lungs.

Mr Nemeth had been to hospital on January 11 and again on January 16 after experiencing bouts of vomiting which doctors could not explain.

Although help was offered from the hospital’s alcohol team, Mr Nemeth refused this.

His brother, Mr Kocsis said: “We did not know that my brother was offered any help, that is news to us.”

Greater Manchester Police said there was no evidence to suggest any third-party involvement and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

To conclude, Mr Pollard gave the cause of death as 1A asphyxia as an accidental death.
