Emergency services attended an 11 vehicle crash which left the road shut for a number of hours.

The smash happened last night (Sunday)  on Church Street.

At around 10.45pm local residents reported hearing multiple loud bangs coming from the Church Street area.

Debris from cars is still strewn in the area and the crash has left a big hole in the wall of Horwich Day Nursery.

Am employee at the nursery said: “I came in at 7am this morning to find a big hole in the wall but I don’t really know much about what happened.”

Fire crews from Bolton Central and Atherton were in attendance for around an hour and a half and used specialist equipment to make the  vehicles and surrounding area safe.

One person was taken to hospital after being assessed by paramedics from North West Ambulance Service.

Greater Manchester Police said that they are conducting enquiries to find out how the crash happened.

One local resident said: “Well it was extremely lucky no one was killed, the damage caused to parked cars and vans and the nursery walls shows how bad the crash was.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before!"

The force of the crash say residents shunted some of the parked vehicles into houses and neighbours questioned how the occupants were able to get out of the car given the damage it sustained.

Another resident said: “The engine was on fire

“Multiple people were hurt.

"How they managed to get out I don't know.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At approximately 10.45pm on Sunday, 30 July 2023, firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving 11 vehicles on Church Street in Bolton.

“Two fire engines from Bolton Central and Atherton fire stations quickly attended the scene.

“Fire crews used lighting, a thermal imaging camera and hearth kit to make the area safe.

“A number of people were assessed by paramedics from Northwest Ambulance Service at the scene, and one person was conveyed to hospital.

“Fire crews were at the scene for around one hour and thirty minutes.”

A spokesperson for GMP said: “At around 10.35pm last night (30 July), officers responded to reports of an road traffic  collision in Church Street, Horwich.

“One person was injured, and enquiries are ongoing.”

This morning residents in the area were offering those affected assistance with lifts and other help.
