Traffic was stopped on the motorway this morning after police were called to a concern for welfare.

Police shut part of the carriageway at around 7am after being called to the M60.

They found a man had jumped from a bridge into the Manchester Ship Canal.

He was found on the River Irwell embankment after he was rescued by members of the public.

One lane was closed between the Trafford Boulevard Junction 10 and 11, Liverpool Road (Barton), and commuters were caught in congestion as far back as the Princess Parkway Interchange, Junction 5.

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7am this morning (Wednesday 16 August 2023), officers were called to concerns for welfare of a man on Barton Bridge.

“Emergency services attended the scene to find that a man had jumped from the bridge into the water below.

“Specialists’ officers and colleagues from the North West Ambulance Service attended the scene and located the man on the embankment of the River Irwell after he was rescued by members of the public.

“No arrests have been made and the man has been taken to hospital.”

The road was reopened by 8am.
