Two women have been bailed by police after being spotted walking on a motorway near Kearsley.

The two women were arrested after officers were called to the M61 at around 3.30am today, Sunday.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) responded to reports of two people walking on the carriageway in the early hours of this morning.

Lanes on the motorway were closed while police responded to the incident. GMP has since confirmed that two women were arrested, bailed and escorted home by officers.

They are due to be summoned for traffic offences.

A GMP spokesman said: “Officers made sure the two women were safe and well.”

The news comes after a cyclist was spotted on the M60 between Bury and Bolton earlier this month, in an unrelated incident.

One lane was closed and the man was accompanied off the motorway and advised that the Highway Code forbids cyclists and pedestrians from using it.
