A DRINK-DRIVER caused a crash when his car collided with two parked vehicles on a housing estate in the early hours of the morning.

Police attended a road traffic collision on Meadow Road in Mirehouse, Whitehaven, just before 1am on August 9.

Sam Casson, 19, had driven a Seat Leon into two parked vehicles. There was serious front end damage to his car and the air bags had deployed, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutor Pamela Fee said the defendant told police he had drunk a few alcoholic drinks that night but “felt ok”.

He gave a reading of 60mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath at the roadside. The legal limit to drive is 35mcg.

Casson was initially taken to hospital, where medical staff confirmed he was fit to be detained. He gave a reading of 51mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath at the police station.

He was interviewed by police and admitted drink driving and causing a road traffic collision.

The defendant, of Wasdale Close, Whitehaven, pleaded guilty to driving with alcohol level above the limit.

Casson, who was not legally represented, said: “I would like to apologise. It’s completely out of character for me to do something like that. I was just going through a rough time.”

Magistrates banned Casson from driving for 12 months, to be reduced by 12 weeks, if he completes the drink-drivers’ rehabilitation course.

He was fined £323 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £129 victim surcharge.
