A councillor has said action will be taken in regard to the dilapidated state of a historic pub in Bolton.

The Shakespeare Pub in Farnworth has broken windows and a damaged vehicle  is parked at the back.

The uninhabited building, which has been described as being in an “unsightly state,” went up for auction in July last year.

The pub, located on Glynne Street, Farnworth, has been there for just under one hundred years and has Grade II listed status.

Ward councillor Sue Haworth has said she will ensure the issues at the building are dealt with.

She said: “The pub has been closed for some time now and it went into auction sale in July last year.

“It is just short of being a hundred years old as a building and it has Grade II listed building status.

“The building has declined and has some breakage at windows and the council does have powers in enforcement and building control to deal with the unsightly state and also to deal with the public safety concerns being raised by local residents.

“I will ensure all of the matters are attended to.”

She added: “There is also an abandoned car parked at the pub site. I will ensure that SORN statutory off road notification is checked along with the other DVLA usual checks carried out and I am able to report it as abandoned to neighbourhood services at the council.”

The building was auctioned off online last year and had a guide price of £400,000 to £450,000.

Potential buyers were advised to make contact Historic England.

It is unclear if it was sold and if so who to when it went under the hammer at North West Auction House, based in Preston.

The Bolton News was unable to locate the owner of the building.
