Doctor Who & Trainspotting stars filming with Netflix in Bolton

Filming for “Toxic Town”, based on the real-life story of the Corby Poisonings, is taking place in Bolton town centre.

The drama is based on the Corby poisonings, one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals.

In 2010, Corby Borough Council admitted that it had made mistakes in the clean up of the Northamptonshire town's steelworks.

It was reported that many families reached an out-of-court settlement after they said their children were born with defects.

The new series will feature a host of famous faces including Doctor Who - Jodie Whittaker, Trainspotting and The Full Monty actor, Robert Carlyle, and Rory Kinnear, from The Bank of Dave.

Other stars include Aimee Lou Wood, best known for playing Aimee Gibbs in Sex Education and Brendan Coyle, who played Mr Bates in Downton Abbey.

Speaking about filming for the show in Bolton, the council’s executive cabinet member for culture, Cllr Nadeem Ayub, said:“ Once again Bolton is in the spotlight as we welcome some of the biggest names in showbusiness.

“Major companies like Netflix trust Bolton as a location for their big-budget dramas thanks to our growing reputation as a supportive and reliable partner to the film industry.

“As a direct result of the hard work of the council, we continue to attract film productions which boost the economy and showcase the best of Bolton to a global audience.”

It will focus on three mothers who take on a David and Goliath fight for justice by tracing through the years of their fight, a terrible truth comes to the surface - one of stinging injustice.

The series is coming from multi-award-winning writer, Jack Thorne, who said: "The Corby Toxic Waste Case is one of those moments in history that is defining.

“It showed our ability to close our eyes and ears to the safety of our people. It also showed the remarkable way that people will fight for what's right.

“Toxic Town tells the story of these funny, brave, incredible women and the way they scrapped for their children. It has been a true privilege working with Annabel, Minkie, Delyth and the whole Broke & Bones family on this incredible story, and we are so grateful to Netflix for giving us the opportunity and support in telling it."
