Officers have been cracking down on speed in Westhoughton this week as part of Operation Portman.

Officers have been conducting speed checks in the area over the last two nights, September 11 and 12, and have stopped a number of drivers for excess speed on Manchester Road near to Chequerbent roundabout and Chew Moor Lane.

A spokesperson for Bolton West Greater Manchester Police said: “Over the last two nights officers from the Bolton West Neighbourhood Team have conducted speed checks around Westhoughton.

“A number of drivers were stopped for excess speed on Manchester Road near to Chequerbent roundabout and Chew Moor Lane.”

The speed enforcement comes as part of Operation Portman, which was launched in response to concerns over the number of serious road incidents in the town.

Hundreds of drivers have been reported for different alleged driving offences since the launch of the operation more than 12 months ago.

To help them catch speeding drivers, officers have acquired two laser devices to record speeding vehicles.

Officers said that the operation has resulted in a huge reduction in serious injuries in Bolton.
