A book club in Bolton has launched a book, written entirely by children who are members.

The Extra Readers Club, founded in Farnworth, started as a book club pre-pandemic, but grew into an online club which provides creative writing skills to children.

Founder of the group, Habi Akinteye, started the group to show the children the importance of reading.

Habi is a mental health nurse and also works in publishing, which has led her to publish books on behalf of the children.

They are currently releasing a new book, Blast Off: The Unforgettable Adventures, which has been written by three young authors from the club.

The Bolton News:

Habi said: "It started off from us going to the library every month to instil that love of reading in kids.

"Then the pandemic hit and I didn't want to leave the kids with nothing creative or engaging to do, so I thought I would start creative writing and share skills with the kids, as I am a published author.

"We are doing a contest every year, then the kids will get a book published. We did one last year, Extraordinary Figures in History, that is on Amazon.

"The children had a sense of pride and accomplishment and we had a party to celebrate their achievement."

She added: "The group are 90 per cent black children and 10 per cent Asian, BAME children, giving them that voice and helping them to see they can do great things as kids.

"I founded it in Farnworth, but the club is running online on Zoom. There are kids from Bolton, Manchester and Coventry who are part of it - there are about 45 of them."

A celebration of the new book is set to take place on October 7.
