UPDATE: The motorway has reopened

The M62 is closed in both directions as GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit respond to an incident where a car has struck a pedestrian.

At around 12.15am today (Tuesday 19 September 2023) , officers were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the M62.

Emergency services attended the scene, and sadly an adult male was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 25-year-old man remained at the scene was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been taken to custody for further questioning.

Enquiries are ongoing at this stage.

The M62 between Eccles and Birchwood will be closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed through the morning while officers conduct their investigations.

Alternative diversions are being put in place.

Police are urging drivers to avoid the area.

A spokesman North West Motorway Police said: " The M62 is still closed between J11 & J12 in both directions. Traffic is already building up leading up to the closures. If this is your usual commute, please consider an alternative route and allow plenty of time for your journey."
