A powerful play to be staged in Bolton shows the fight women put up to get an education.

Blue Stockings, written by Jessica Swale, will be performed by Bolton Little Theatre at the end of this month.

Set in 1896, the play follows four young women at Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women.

However, they still find themselves barred from graduating and obtaining a degree, as well as facing the social ostracism of being a 'blue stocking'- an 'unnatural' educated woman.

The play follows those four women over the course of one academic year as they fight for education and self determination against the larger backdrop of women's suffrage.

Blue Stockings will show at the theatre in the evenings from Saturday, October 21 to Saturday, October 28 at 7.30pm.

There will also be a matinee on Sunday, October 22 at 2pm.
