Lancashire Police has confirmed the death of a man on the M61 near Rivington this morning, Sunday.

Police say they were called to a bridge over the motorway close to Rivington following reports of a sudden death.

The force confirmed it discovered the body of a man at around 11.30am. The man’s death is not being treated a suspicious.

Earlier today, the M61 was closed in both directions between junction 8 for Millennium Way in Chorley and junction 6 for De Havilland Way in Horwich due to a “police incident.”

Lancashire Police officers attended the scene and the motorway was closed for around an hour before both lanes were reopened at about 1.30pm.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We were called at around 11.30am today (Sunday, October 15) to a bridge over the M61 close to Rivington, to reports of a sudden death.

“We attended and sadly found the body of a man.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed to the coroner.

“The motorway was closed in both directions but has since re-opened.”
