Police have fired a warning ahead of Bolton Wanderers' game at home to Blackpool on Saturday, which falls on Armistice Day.

The match at the Toughsheet Community Stadium kicks off at 3pm and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said  the force is "working hard behind the scenes to ensure that both sets of fans can enjoy the action safely".

There has been ill feeling between the two clubs following the death of 17-year-old Blackpool fan Kevin Olsson, who was stabbed to death at Blackpool's Bloomfield Road stadium at a match between the two clubs on August 24, 1974.

Officers will be working with partner agencies around the stadium, Bolton town centre, and travel hubs which spectators will be using to keep fans safe.

Chief Superintendent Stephanie Parker, from GMP's Bolton district, said: “This weekend’s fixture is set to be an exciting one, and we want everyone involved from fans to players and staff at the stadium to safely enjoy the game.

“We will not be tolerating any racism, homophobia, or offensive chanting and behaviour, and will act appropriately if this presents itself.

"Respect has always been a fundamental foundation of football and we will work to ensure this principle is maintained.

“Ultimately, we are there to help you. If you have any concerns regarding criminality or want us to aid you with something, our officers are there to support you. They will be more than happy to discuss any issues with you and provide you with guidance or action where necessary.

“If you would like to report anything, you can do so at any time by calling 101, or visiting www.gmp.police.uk. You can also report information via the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

Wanderers CEO Neil Hart added: "We are looking forward to welcoming a bumper crowd to the Toughsheet Community Stadium this weekend.

"Our priority is to ensure everyone has a fantastic matchday experience and we extend our thanks to Greater Manchester Police who are working hard with us to make that happen.

"As ever, we urge supporters to help us put a stop to any kind of behaviour that does not represent our club - we are here to deliver a safe and exciting experience for all and our reporting lines are open."
