They added that it “was designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1928 and fully opened as a bank in 1935.”

The Top 50 Boutique Hotels added: “The hotel boasts 60 showstopping bedrooms over seven floors - 55 bedrooms and five Inner Sanctum Suites. The suites are each named after an iconic Manchester figure and feature a huge wonder wall screen, signature emperor-sized feather-bed, vintage suitcases, buckled belts and hat boxes that will transport guests back to the golden age of travel.

“A dining experience in the two AA Rosette Honey Restaurant provides the perfect setting for a sumptuous feast with breathtaking views.

“Guests can also immerse themselves in the charm of the speakeasy GILT Club, an underground function and event space found deep inside the former vaults. The club, which is reminiscent of the famous Parisien 1920s and 1930s cabaret clubs will transport guests to a bygone era coupled with some of the best entertainment in town.

“And don’t forget the beauty concierge offering five-star beauty services. It calls on a network of over 600 professionally vetted, experienced beauty providers, which can be booked at the hotel.

“The hotel hit the national headlines in 2010 when it was alleged that safe deposit boxes containing jewellery and gold, as well as master tapes of recording sessions from Joy Division and New Order were found on site.”

One reviewer said: “Well this hotel is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever visited and I have visited the best in Venice , Dubai and New York to mention a few and this is truly up among the best .

“As you enter you feel transported back to a world of 1920’s glamour and luxury and it does not disappoint as you head to your room . It’s a continuous feast for all of your senses and the only downside to it is that my stay was not long enough !

“The price is on the more expensive side of average however this hotel is worth every penny to make an occasion special plus it’s location is perfect for shopping , meals and theatre trips as you are right in the beating heart of Manchester. Highly recommend and we will definitely be visiting again !”

“A 14-piece jazz band led by Will and singer James were simply incredible. The music were songs we all knew and we were singing and dancing all night long. If you have the opportunity to experience this, I urge to do so. You won’t be disappointed!”

Chris Lowe, Group Director, Hospitality and Manufacturing at William Reed, said: “We are delighted to be revealing this fantastic new list for 2023.

“This year’s number one The Newt is a worthy winner and the highest new entry Boys Hall shows the innovation taking place within the sector.  It is so encouraging to see so many new entrants in the Top 50 this year as well as being able to showcase such a range of unique hotel experiences available across the UK.”
