A man in his 60s has been arrested after police were called to reports of gunfire in the early hours.

Officers were called to Heath Street in Golborne just before 1am on the morning of Saturday December 9 after reports that a gun had been fired.

The man was arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and two shotguns were seized after police searched a house on the Golborne road.

Detective Chief Inspector Hayley Riley, of Wigan CID, said: “This was a situation that had the potential to escalate and fortunately no-one was injured.

“Specialist officers quickly attended to make sure the scene was safe and arrested the man suspected of firing the gun.

“It was an isolated incident with no wider threat to the wider community.

“People in Manchester are reminded of their responsibilities around owning and using firearms more information and advice can be found on the GMP website.”

DCI Riley says that the man remains in custody for questioning, while the shotguns were taken away for forensic tests.
