An inquest opened into the death of a one-year-old who became ill while on holiday.

Penelope Collier-Johnson became ill with a cough and congestion while in Turkey.

The family, from Astley Bridge, spoke to a doctor in the country at the time and to their doctor in the UK after their return to their home on Hawarden Street.

On July 2, they put the one-year-old to bed in a cot, but she was unresponsive around an hour later. She was declared dead at the hospital on the same day.

At Bolton Coroner's Court this week an inquest opened into the death before assistant coroner Michael Pemberton.

The Police Coroner's Officer Andrew Pickles said an investigation suggested there were no suspicious circumstances.

Mr Pickles said: "Whilst on holiday in Turkey Penelope became unwell with a cough and congestion."

"On return to the UK Penelope remained unwell."

Mr Pickles added: "She was placed in a cot at her home.

"They checked an hour later and she was unresponsive."

A postmortem said the cause of death was unascertained but the family suggested there was mould at their home on Hawarden Street, a private rental property, and there was an outbreak of illness at their hotel in Turkey.

The assistant coroner advised them the inquest would not be able to answer all of their questions due to its specific scope but he assured them the inquest would look into everything it was able to according to the law.

Mr Pemberton said: "From the bottom of my heart I cannot imagine what you are going through today. I am so sorry we meet in these circumstances.

"Any death is tragic but a child's death is all the more tragic."

Mr Pemberton adjourned the inquest until a date to be determined in the New Year.
