It would not be Christmas without a party.

And so it was the case for  Asian Elders who enjoyed plenty of festive fun at The Slaterfield Centre in Great Lever on Tuesday, December 12.

Guests were treated to food, a catwalk, music, dancing and an embroidery competition.

The group meets at the Asian Elders Resource Centre, which cares for elderly Asian people in Bolton.

Chan Parmar, chairman of the centre, said: “It was very good, had about 75-80 people, we had a general knowledge quiz and everyone had to wear orange – most of them did!

“There was also had an embroidery competition, from which three winners were picked, although everyone was a winner!.

“Everybody put an effort in, we shared food, had music and dancing, and just had a really good time. People coming together and enjoying a good time during advent.”

He added: “Asian Elders was established 33 years ago in Bolton, the concept was that elderly Asian people come together.

“We chat about things happening, we do yoga, exercise, we give updates about the changing world, pensions, all those kinds of things we help them with.

“These are people who came to this country in the 1950s and 60s, now they are retired and some of them are quite lonely.

“They might be struggling to do many things, so we like to help them - that is basically it. We bring them together to share food, they come to the centre three times a week at Shanti Medical Centre.

“Food, exercise information, take them to market and bring them back. It is a relief for families.”
