A warning has gone out after reports of thieves “targeting work vans".

According to police, reports have been received in the Westhoughton area, particularly around Park Road and The Wellend.

Officers say they have already had specific crimes in these areas and have warned people, particularly van owners to remain vigilant as they investigate.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “There has been a recent increase in vehicle crime in the Westhoughton area with thieves targeting work vans for tools.

“They are breaking into vehicles by peeling back the doors to gain entry.

“We have crimes reported on Park Road and The Welland.

“Please remove all valuables from your vehicles and be extra vigilant in securing your property. Consider registering your valuables with Immobilise.”

As yet no further details have been released about the stolen tools.

Police have appealed for anyone who may know anything about vans being targeted in Westhoughton or who has any other concerns about vehicle crime to get in touch.

They can do so by calling 101 or 999 in the event of an emergency.

Alternatively, witnesses can call independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

People can register their property by going to searching for Immobilise online as police recommend.
