Bolton Council has advised that a tree on private land "needs" to be removed after part of it fell onto a neighbouring house.

The incident happened during Storm Elin, when the part of the tree, which stood on Thorn Lea Close, fell onto the roof of the house on adjacent Dorrian Mews.

After it fell, residents on Dorrian Mews raised concern trees on the land.

The council came out and decided that the tree left with "a large wound" should be felled on safety grounds. Another tree which would remain was also recommended to be felled, as it would be "more exposed".

Katrina Georgiou, a resident of Dorrian Mews, said: "I live on Dorrian Mews off Chorley New Road, which backs onto Thorn Lea Close.

"Part of one of the trees fell onto my neighbour's roof, causing damage. Now the other part has been left standing.

"When it is windy you can see the trees swaying. I called the council to see if they can cut them down.

"Brian in charge of trees at the council came out and said that they should cut it down. "

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “In response the neighbours’ concerns, a letter was sent to the resident of the property on Thorn Lea Close to advise that the storm damaged trees would need to be removed entirely on safety grounds.

“The owner of the property has since been in touch to say that a contractor inspected the trees before Christmas and is due to return on the 9 January to undertake the recommended works.”

The Bolton News has seen a copy of the letter the council sent to the resident.

It says: "I have inspected from the rear garden of the property on Dorrian Mews alongside the resident and noted one tree has been left with a large wound.

"The rest of the standing tree should be felled on safety grounds, due to this large split section and decay evident on the remaining part.

"I would also recommend that the adjacent tree is either reduced in height or felled completely, as this tree would be more exposed once the storm damaged tree is removed."

Speaking to The Bolton News, a resident at the Thorn Lea Close property said a tree feller is set to come on January 9.
