People have always complained about rising taxes. In April 1970, one stall in Bolton Market Hall decided to go public.

The Bolton News: Palatine Food, Bolton Market Hall, 1970

Palatine Food Services decided to stick a large notice on the the till for shoppers to see how many different taxes that the business had to pay.

In thanking folk for their custom, the stall owners said that shoppers were helping to pay for 16 different taxes plus Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s wages!

Among the taxes listed were Company Tax, Purchase Tax, Import Tax and even Mineral Water Tax.

Just as interesting as the list are the various goods on display.

Clearly creamed tapioca was a big seller in 1970 and who remembers the bottles of sterilised milk complete with metal caps?
