Schoolchildren can take part in a 'Ready, Steady, Cook' inspired competition to promote healthy eating.

Schools can book The Original School Food Showdown, which is an award-winning, interactive educational cooking roadshow, which is inspired by the popular BBC cooking game show.

Young people are invited to join two teams, the Red Chillies and the Green Peas, to compete in cooking up the healthiest, most delicious meal inj ust 15 minutes from a random selection of 12 ingredients.

Built around the NHS Eatwell Guide, the show teaches students about fresh ingredients from the different food groups, like vegetables, meats and fruits, whilst directly involving students in making their own healthy dishes, resulting in an “exhilarating” cook-off experience.

The concept won the Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Award, the “King of” Award for Healthy Eating in Education, and the “Best Teacher” Award in Extra-Curricular Education.

Company director at The Fun Food Company and School Food Showdown chef Ian Rotherham said: “The whole aim of it is to drive home the importance of eating right and choosing the right foods to put in our meals”

“It’s all based around the NHS Eat Well guide, so it’s not just what our opinion is, it’s government guidelines.”

Ian believes School Food Showdown can teach children about healthier food choices that are as delicious as they are cheap.

“We live in a world where things are fast-paced. The faster the food the better, in a lot of cases,” he added.

He said: “But what we see in supermarkets and fast-food chains, in order to get food that lasts a long time or fast food, they add lots of salts, sodium and preservatives, and the nutritional value drops.

“A part of the show we emphasise is how quick and how easy it is to cook a healthy, balanced meal. For example, we give our students 15 minutes to cook. It could be a spinach and chickpea curry, a Chinese orange chicken stir fry, or a mushroom stroganoff.”

“We hope to inspire the generation that’s coming up to cook fresh food. Not just to go for the fast, convenient food, but to pick fresh ingredients and, quite often, it is cheaper to do it like that as well.”
