Bolton is set to receive nearly £1million over the next two years as part of a major plan for the future of the borough’s roads.

The money will be provided in instalment of £485,000 this financial year and the year after from “Network North” funding, taken from the now cancelled HS2 railway project.

This will be used amid a new 10-year plan for Bolton’s roads, which will include a programme of maintenance and repairs on major roads like Manchester Road, Chorley Road and Bury Road.

Bolton Council cabinet member for highways Cllr Hamid Khurram said: “This commitment to future funding will allow us set out our long-term commitments to highways maintenance and improvements.

“I’m sure residents, commuters and businesses will all benefit from being able to see where and when road improvements are set to be made.

“As well as routine maintenance, the council will continue to carry out emergency repairs when the safety of road users is at risk.”

The council has drawn up the plan after new government rules on funding settlements were brought in.

Officials say that the programme takes the state of Bolton’s road network into account and drawn upon recent survey.

But a council report, which lists the planned road repairs, also says that some roads not on the list may deteriorate to a state where they need to be prioritised for repair.

The report said: “From 2024/25 the Department for Transport are now requiring local authorities to publish long term maintenance plans covering at least an eight-year programme period from beyond 2024/25.

“This is to reflect proposed long term maintenance settlements which should assist with asset management planning.”

It added: “It is important to note that this is a provisional programme taking account of the state of the classified network from the most recent condition surveys and during the period some roads not on the list will deteriorate to a state where they may need to be added to the list and the priority of roads on the list put back to accommodate this.”

Residents are urged only to report maintenance issues when they meet the required level of work of 40mm deep in a road and 25mm deep in a footway / pavement or crossing.

Issues can be reported to the council either on the website, Potholes, road and pavement problems – Bolton Council.

People are asked to include as much information as possible, including the location, description and a photograph of the issue, if safe to do so.

The £485,000 funding for 2023-24 and 2024-55 is subject to final confirmation by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

The 10-year plan will be put before Cllr Khurram for consideration on March 13.
