The next step in building a “beautiful new neighbourhood” in the heart of the town centre has been given the go-ahead.

The £35M Deansgate Gardens, previously known as Central Street, scheme is currently underway aimed at building 167 new homes in central Bolton.

Earlier this week, Bolton Council agreed to waive standing orders for contracts on the site, meaning that developers Carrick can continue on with the next phase.

Council deputy leader Akhtar Zaman said: “We know that Carrick are already on site and it makes sense for them to carry on the highways work there.

“In terms of Central Street, this will create new residential centre with town houses and apartments.

“So when the building work is concluded we will be adding a beautiful new neighbourhood to our town centre which we hope will encourage more people to live here and improve our economy as well.”

Work began on the site, opposite the old Beales Department store, began in 2023 and will aim to build 158 homes over an old car park and abandoned buildings.

Construction has been carried out by Carrick for developers Place First.

It forms part of successive Bolton Council leadership’s £1billion “masterplan” bid to regenerate the town.

Cllr Zaman, who also sits as cabinet member for regeneration, gave the go-ahead to waive standing orders on the site this week.

This will mean that a public realm design for the site by the authority’s highways team will be priced in by contractors Caddick at costs of around £1.25M.

A council report said: “In respect of the Place First residential development at Central Street, now called Deansgate Gardens, which will create 158 new homes, progress along the Deansgate and Central Street frontages is clearly visible with the four and five storey blocks now constructed to roof level.

“The development is due for completion in spring/summer of 2025 with construction of the public realm to commence thereafter for completion at the end of 2025.”

It added: “The cost of the works is in the region of £1.25M, which now includes the addition of the section of Deansgate from Central Street to Knowsley Street, for which Town Centre Strategy funding for highways works within the Croal Valley intervention area has been identified.”
