An 87-year-old man who was riding a mobility scooter has died after a crash with a car in Atherton.

A woman was arrested at the scene and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the crash that occurred on Flapper Fold Lane yesterday (April 12) at around midday.

Reports suggest a Volkswagen Golf was travelling along Flapper Fold Lane when it crashed with a mobility scooter as it crossed the carriageway.

Police say this resulted in the 87-year-old rider becoming unseated and knocked to the ground.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man died in hospital later in the evening.

A 30-year-old woman was initially arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and driving a vehicle whilst under the influence of a specified drug following a positive roadside test. She has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

PC Phil Drummond from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This was a tragic incident where we are providing specialist support to the family of the victim and are now appealing to the local community for additional information.
