A dramatic police chase resulted in a van overturning and two officers being injured in Leigh.

Shortly after 8am this morning, a vehicle overturned on Holden Road and footage captured by nearby resident Jaz Green showed two Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers rush to the van.

Jaz Green, who lives on the street, told The Bolton News that she looked out of the window of her home when she heard a "bang" and saw the vehicle on its side.

The 30-year-old said: "I’d just got up, I’m used to hearing sirens but then I heard a bang and was worried for the cars.

"So I went out to look through the window and saw it tip."

Six police vehicles and two fire engines attended the scene, while two of the force's cars were looked over by a mechanic before having to be towed away for repair.

According to Miss Green, who owns Shampooches Leigh, a neighbouring resident got in touch with her to say that the van had allegedly "smashed into lots of other cars further down the road at Green Lane Chippy".

The woman told her that "nobody was hurt but her husband's car is a complete wreck".

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: “At 7:40am this morning we were called by a member of the public to reports of a man driving a van dangerously in Ince. To maintain the safety of the public, and bring this vehicle to a stop, a pursuit was authorised for our specially trainer drivers.

“The vehicle collided with, and damaged, numerous vehicles belonging to members of the public. The vehicle then stopped and rammed police on Kendal Road, Ince, before making off.

“The van overturned in the process on Holden Road, but thankfully no members of the public were injured.”

They continued: “However, two of our officers reported injuries. They received further medical treatment at the scene.

“A 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and driving whilst under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“Enquiries are ongoing to identify a second man we believe was present in the vehicle.”
