Traffic authorities worked hard last night to deal with flooding on the M60.

One lane was forced to close on the M60 Junction 17, Whitefield Interchange after flooding reports.

One side of the motorway was flooded extensively, rendering it dangerous for road users.

The entry slip road was closed while National Highways officers worked to drain the water.

North West Motorway Police said: "This is the situation on M60 junction 17 exit slip on anticlockwise and the entry slip at j17 are closed."

A similar thing was reported in the Channel 5 documentary, The Motorway.

The episode featured localised flooding on the M66, affecting the hard shoulder.

Officers are seen trying to clear the heavy water after the rain.

They do this by shovelling most of it off the road and onto the grass verge, but also draining the water.

No accidents or incidents were reported during this incident, but drivers were warned to expect delays and diversion routes were in place for those wanting to get off at the entry slip road.

Flooding is common in this area when heavy rain falls, with National Highways North West aware of the problem they faced at this time.

Bolton will see highs of 20 degrees today despite rain forecasted to fall from 5pm, lasting until the early hours of tomorrow morning.

"Light winds but turning a little breezier during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 21 °C."
