The Bolton areas where Andy Burnham is most popular and least popular were revealed in figures from the Greater Manchester mayoral elections.

The Metro Mayor won a third term in office with more than 420,000 votes, or 63.4 per cent of the vote, when the results were revealed on May 4.

Mr Burnham won in all but one council ward in the city-region – Werneth, Oldham – but figures from the Greater Manchester mayoral elections released last week show the share of the vote in each council ward.

In Bolton they show he is most popular in Horwich North with 66 per cent of the vote and he is least popular in Halliwell with 46 per cent of the vote.

The position of Horwich North is a little surprising as, in the council chamber, the Labour Group has no councillors in this council ward. Mr Burnham beat the next closest candidate, Laura Evans (Conservative), by 2,192 votes.

The position of Halliwell is less surprising as, in the council election, the Labour Group lost a councillor to the Green Party in this council ward. Mr Burnham beat the next closest candidate, Hannah Spencer (Green), by 334 votes.

The prominence of the Green Party, also apparent in Rumworth, is thought to be at least in part the result of its position on the Israeli-Palestinian war.

On May 4, Mr Burnham told The Bolton News it is important to listen to where the share of the vote is lower.

He said: "I think the elections are about listening and sometimes messages need to be sent via via the elections. 

"There is a reason why people vote they way they vote so I go there to understand it and to work with people."
