A long-awaited road widening scheme got underway in August 1939 between the Squirrel Hotel at Anderton and Crown Square in Horwich.
This photo shows the scene at Anderton Ford Bridge where the foundations were being laid for a larger bridge.
In the background you can see the Squirrel Hotel which was demolished in the 1960s
