A MAN has been arrested following the alleged rape of a woman behind a retail park in Leigh.

Earlier this morning, residents reported witnessing a police presence along Parsonage Way, behind Parsonage retail park.

A blue police tent was also seen in the bushes near to Westleigh Brook, intended to preserve the scene.

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that the incident is in connection with an alleged rape in the early hours, with a man in his 40s arrested.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers were called to a report of the concern for welfare of a woman on Parsonage Way in Manchester just after 6.10am this morning (Wednesday, May 22).

"From initial enquiries, detectives believe that the woman was raped and a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of rape at the scene. He remains in police custody for questioning. 

"An investigation was immediately launched and a number of lines of enquiry are already being followed up. The victim is also currently being supported by specialist services."
