A neighbourhood just minutes away from Bolton town centre has been left reeling after the death of a man in a suspected “stabbing.”

Three people have now been charged in connection with the alleged murder of the 35-year-old man, who has yet to be identified, on Bromwich Street, The Haulgh.

Police stayed on the scene throughout Friday night, first noticed by people living there earlier in the evening.

A mother who lives nearby said: “We definitely thought it was serious with all that police presence.”

The police were still at the scene when she returned on Saturday evening.

She added: “There was a police car at the top of our street when we got back last night, just one car, it would have been about 10.30pm when we got back.”

Remains of police tape could still be seen in the area on Saturday afternoon, though the scene had largely cleared by then.

By Sunday, an unseasonably cold and wet day for June, police had confirmed that the man had died, and that three people had been charged.

But many of the people around Bromwich Street say violent crime has been a long-running concern for them all across the town.

One resident said: “Welcome to Bolton, it’s rife with knife crime these days!”

Another who lived nearby said she was worried for her and her family’s safety when she thought about what the town was “coming to these days.”

It is believed that the man was taken to hospital after the suspected stabbing injury and died of his injuries shortly after.

On Sunday morning, police confirmed that 48-year-old Paul Simmons, of Bradford Street, had been charged with murder.

Jordan Downes, 31, of no fixed abode, has been charged with assisting an offender, while Kelly Hughes, 37, also of no fixed abode, has been charged with obstructing police.

Officers say that a 40-year-old man was also arrested and his since been released on bail while they continue their enquiries.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "The charges relate to an incident on Friday June 7 2024, when police were called at around 7.15pm to reports that a man had been stabbed on Bradford Street in Bolton.

"He was taken to hospital but tragically passed away as a result of his injuries."

Simmons, Downes and Hughes have all been remanded into custody and are set to be brought before Bolton Magistrates Court on Monday June 10.
