Chain pubs are a common feature of the UK nowadays, but sometimes you want something a little more unique.
And sometimes punters are after something with a little more individual personality.
The 'Neverspoons' app was created for this reason, to highlight independent pubs across the country.
Bolton has a range of unique pubs, and we have picked five in the town centre that Neverspoons highlights.
Think we are missing any? Let us know in the comments below.
Ye Olde Man and Scythe
Being Britain's fourth oldest pub, the Man and Scythe is a public house with a truly unique atmosphere, believed to have been first established in (the 1200s) (and potentially haunted).
It offers a range of ales, lagers and ciders, having been the CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year in 2011, alongside spirits and wines.
For those who are peckish, Carrs Pasties are also on offer.
The Swan and Barristers
This pair of pubs has been a fixture on the corner of Churchgate and Bradshawgate.
Particularly well-known for their karaoke, the late Tom Parker of The Wanted cut his teeth singing at the pubs.
There is also a beer garden between the two pubs where punters can catch a bit of sun.
Hen and Chickens
This Deansgate pub, a stone's throw from Bolton's combined courthouse, is thought to be one of the oldest in the town centre.
With live music from singers to punk bands and everything in between, as well as karaoke, music plays a large part at the pub.
It also offers a range of cask ales, food and more.
Sweet Green Tavern
Just across from the train station, this pub stands alone on an island in the middle of the Trinity Street/Newport Street junction.
Its beer mat-adorned walls showcase the range of ales it has offered over the years, along with artwork and murals.
With pool, a jukebox and an open fire for the colder winter months, this characterful boozer is definitely one to check out.
Alma Inn
Well-versed in the live music scene in Bolton, the Alma is known for its alternative credentials, but also functions as a community pub.
It regularly hosts rock and metal bands, as well as fortnightly quiz nights and weekly board game nights.
Having stood since the 1850s, the pub mixes old and new, with its sticker-covered walls and vibrant lighting.
