A modern classic is to be staged at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre for the first time.

Mike Leigh's Abigail's Party will be part of the spring programme at the theatre which begins with two short Caryl Churchill plays being performed together.

Annette Badland who starred in Ted Lasso and Heartstopper as well as in Doctor Who will perform in Escaped Alone and What If If Only.

She will be joined in Escaped Alone by Maureen Beattie, who returns to the Exchange following her role in Death of a Salesman.

The cast for this double-header, directed by Sarah Frankcom, also includes Souad Faress, who TV viewers will know through Game of Thrones; Margot Leicester and Bea Glancy who starred in the world premiere of The Book Thief at Bolton's Octagon Theatre.

Eighteen members of the Royal Exchange's Elders Company will also feature in this production.

Escaped Alone and What If If Only run from February 7 to March 9 and Abigail's Party from April 4 to May 17. Casting for Abigail's Party has yet to be announced.
