A Halloween stroll will take place in Bolton before ending at one of the country's oldest and spookiest pubs.

The Bolton Walking and Outdoors Appreciation Society (BWOAS) is inviting Bolton residents to join them on the walk on the evening of Wednesday, October 29.

The walk around The Haulgh and Leverhulme Park will be taking place from and ending at Bolton's “most haunted pub”, Ye Olde Man and Scythe.

After the two-hour walk, paranormal investigator Mark Tongue will present a talk at the pub, discussing the Man and Scythe’s gruesome history and the supernatural world.

BWOAS committee chairperson, Colin Liptrot from Westhoughton, said: “We always do a Halloween walk somewhere special.

“This year, we decided to do a semi-urban walk from the Man and Scythe pub because it’s one of the most haunted places in the North West, if not the country.

“There’s a lot of history in the pub so we thought it would be interesting to hold our Halloween night there.”

The Man and Scythe is one of the oldest surviving pubs in the UK, dating back to 1251.

The spooky alehouse is said to be haunted by the spirit of a former Earl of Derby, James Stanley, who was executed outside the pub in 1651.

Everyone is welcome to join the group’s Halloween trail, but Colin warned that they often get booked up quickly when the free tickets are released (October 26).

However, those wishing to hear Mark’s paranormal talk at the pub, around 9pm, do not need to book in advance.

“A lot of people coming down that evening will be in fancy dress,” said Mark.

“If anyone from Bolton is interested, it will be a great community event.”

The Bolton Ukulele Group (BUG) will also be doing a “spookulele” performance at the pub that evening.

Since 2011, the BWOAS has put on free community walks every Monday and Wednesday evening.

As the nights are drawing in, the group offers a safe option for those who would like to continue walking through the winter season.

“We are an inclusive and friendly group that walk all over Bolton and beyond,” said Colin.
