A Farnworth based salon owner says she was “overwhelmed” after discovering her business had been named a finalist in The Bolton News Best Hairdressers awards.

Lisa Whelan, 44, has owned La Petite Salon, based on Plodder Lane, for 17 years and says the recognition has come as a 'lovely surprise'.

Lisa, who went straight into hairdressing from school, began her career with an apprenticeship in Farnworth and has never looked back.

She said: “I did hairdressing straight from school. I started with an apprenticeship in Farnworth and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

“I’ve had La Petite Salon for 17 years this August. It’s been good, sometimes difficult, but really rewarding.”

Based on Plodder Lane, Bolton, La Petite Salon has built up a loyal client base over the years, with many customers returning time and time again.

Lisa specialises in balayage, hair extensions and up-dos, and says she is best known for her balayage work.

She said: “I specialise more in balayage's than anything.

“That’s what I’m probably known best for.

“A lot of my clients have been with me for years, but we’re always welcoming new clients too. Every day is different, which I love.”

The salon team is made up of four staff, Lisa, stylist Susan and two apprentices , something she says helps create a close-knit and friendly atmosphere.

Lisa said: “I like it being a small group of us."

Lisa works five days a week, from Tuesday to Saturday, and says one of the biggest perks of running her own business is the flexibility it brings.

She said: “I like being my own boss.

“That flexibility is one of the best things about it.”

The salon recently received a five-star rating on Treatwell in October last year, something Lisa describes as “grateful and rewarding”.

She said: “It’s nice knowing that clients appreciate what we do.

“Thank you to everyone who nominated us and helped get us into the top ten.”

Speaking about if she were to win The Bolton News Best Hairdresser award 2026, she added: “I think I’ll be a bit overwhelmed. I was shocked I found out we were finalists, it was such a nice surprise.”

La Petite Salon is now among those in the running for the Best Hairdressers title in The Bolton News awards, celebrating some of the borough’s most popular and trusted businesses.
