Green-fingered enthusiasts gathered in Edgworth as BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time came to the village for a special recording.

The programme was recorded in collaboration with the Edgworth and District Horticultural Society.

Hosted by Kathy Clugston, the popular show featured expert panellists Matthew Wilson, Christine Walkden and Marcus Chilton Jones, who answered a wide range of questions from an enthusiastic live audience.

The event took place at The Barlow on April 1 at 5pm, with the episode broadcast on April 10.

It is available on BBC Sounds too.

Angela Swallow, membership secretary for the society, said: “It was really lovely when the whole thing came together.

"We are a very active garden club, so it was really nice to host something like this in our little corner of Edgworth.

“It was very entertaining, very interesting, funny and topical – it was a great community event.”

Around 165 members are part of the society, with attendees also travelling from across Lancashire, including Chorley and Blackburn, to be part of the occasion.

The evening covered a variety of gardening topics, from the best potatoes to grow for chips to bee-friendly planting in boggy conditions.

There were also reflections on the sentimental value of gardening tools.

Ms Swallow added: “I have listened to the show for a number of years, so it was nice to see people and put names to faces.”

She explained that the idea to host the programme came after visiting a previous recording in Preston.

“A few of us went to Preston University a couple of years ago when they hosted Gardeners’ Question Time, and I thought, ‘we can do this in Bolton,’” she said.

“Then last October they rang me and said they’d love to bring it to Edgworth.”

The Edgworth and District Horticultural Society has been active since the early 1900s and is now run by a committee of seven volunteers.

The group holds monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at The Barlow, often featuring guest speakers and organised trips to gardens.

Their annual horticultural show will take place on Saturday, August 15 in Edgworth.

The event includes a traditional horticultural show alongside crafts, cookery and visual arts, as well as a café run by the society.
