A useful book packed with lovingly selected local routes has been launched by a well-known Bolton walking group.
The Bolton Ramblers have been organising accessible walking routes in and around Bolton for more than 50 years.
As part of Britain’s walking charity, The Ramblers Association, Bolton’s branch is led by a small but dedicated team of volunteers.
The group offers walks for all abilities, from midweek and weekend rambles of around five miles to longer hikes locally and further afield.
Tony Hough, 71, from Blackrod, has been with the Ramblers for the past 12 years and is a walking encyclopaedia of routes around the area.
He confidently leads walks and even scouts out the journeys beforehand to ensure everything is as it should be.
On behalf of the Bolton Ramblers, Tony has put together ‘Our Favourite Local Walks’, the group’s first publication.
The handy book includes 11 handpicked walks by the group’s most experienced walk leaders.
From the rolling moorlands of Winter Hill to the tranquil paths of Borsdane Wood, the booklet serves as a definitive “best of” collection for local walkers.
“In our book, the leaders share why it’s their favourite walk, points of interest, step-by-step directions and photographs,” said Tony.

Designed with practicality in mind, the A5-sized booklet fits easily into a jacket pocket or rucksack.
To ensure walkers of all levels feel confident on the trail, the guide includes OS map extracts for easy navigation.
Locations include Rivington, Blackrod, Egerton, Cheetham Heights, Westhoughton, Tockholes and Wimberry Hill.
A spokesperson from the Bolton Ramblers said: “This booklet is Bolton Ramblers’ way of sharing the local paths we love most.
“With routes ranging from an easy 2.2-mile walk to a 5.7-mile trek across the moors, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.”
The book has already received a great response from group members, and copies can be obtained directly by emailing boltonramblers@hotmail.co.uk.
At £6.99, all proceeds go back into the Bolton Ramblers.
