A “relaxed” pub on a busy road has been welcoming local residents in for what feels like “forever”.
The Bay Mare, on Blackburn Road, is our pick this time for pub of the week- and it offers more than what the humble roadside exterior entails.
We spoke to the landlady, who took over under a year ago, all about her pub.
Can you introduce yourself?
“I am Ruby Bailey-Oliver. I have only taken over in December. I’m 21 and the new landlady. I started as a glass collector, then behind the bar, and I loved it knew everyone, got along with everyone, and the landlord said they wanted me to go forward.
What's the pub like?
“It’s pretty relaxed, more of a community pub than a party pub and people like that. People like that it’s like an old-style pub.
“We get a mix of ages. I’m younger so we can get more younger people over.”
Do you have any regular events?
“We do free pool on a Monday; Friday night is free jukebox and happy hour on Saturdays 2 for 6 on lagers, we do karaoke on a Saturday night”

Can you tell me a bit more history about the pub?
“It’s been here forever. It’s a listed building been here for a very long time. Since I started working here at 17. I worked for the previous landlords.
“It was 3 houses originally and they made it into a pub.”
Do you have any clubs or teams?
“We do a darts team, usually they play every Thursday.
“There are no other teams at the minute, but I am going to be sponsoring one of my friends younger brothers for football.”
Do you serve food?
“Not at the minute, I am looking into it but they do the selection of crisps and scratching hopefully we’ll have some pasties on.”
What's the best part of running a pub?
“It’s the sense of community. You see everyone, nice to give people a place to come where they feel comfortable and have a nice time.”
What's the worst part?
“Either doing my paperwork or getting people out at last orders.”
